Tipping Policy

Tipping is a longstanding tradition in the Tanzanian tourism industry. While it is always at your discretion and should reflect the quality of service you received, it is an essential part of the income for the hardworking guides, porters, and cooks.
Mountain Trekking Tipping Guidelines
On a typical Kilimanjaro climb, you will have a large support crew. We recommend the following total daily amounts for the entire group to share:
- Lead Guide: $20 - $25 per day
- Assistant Guide: $15 - $20 per day
- Chef: $12 - $15 per day
- Porters: $8 - $10 per porter per day
Safari Tipping Guidelines
For safaris, the crew is smaller (usually just a driver-guide).
- Safari Driver-Guide: $20 - $30 per vehicle per day
- Camp/Lodge Staff: $5 - $10 per day (usually via a communal tip box)
When and How to Tip?
Tips are usually presented at the end of the trek or safari during a "tipping ceremony." We recommend placing the tips for each person in individual envelopes. It is best to tip in US Dollars(printed after 2006) or the equivalent in Tanzanian Shillings.
Note: RAO Tours ensures all our staff are paid fair wages according to KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project) guidelines. Tips are a bonus for their exceptional service above and beyond their base pay.
