Tanzania's Hidden Gem ยท 4,566 m
Africa's best-kept trekking secret. Diverse wildlife, volcanic crater drama, and a sunrise view of Kilimanjaro that defies description.
Mount Meru is one of Tanzania's most rewarding and underrated trekking destinations. Towering over the city of Arusha at 4,566 metres, it offers everything Kilimanjaro does โ diverse ecosystems, dramatic altitude, breathtaking summit views โ but with far fewer trekkers on the trail.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, your Mount Meru trek begins and ends inside Arusha National Park, meaning you will share the lower trails with giraffes, Cape buffaloes, colobus monkeys, and hundreds of bird species. An armed ranger accompanies every group for safety and unparalleled wildlife encounters.
The summit push along the volcanic crater rim at sunrise is one of the most dramatic experiences in East African trekking โ and from the top, you are rewarded with an unforgettable view of Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds.

Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru takes you through Arusha National Park where you will encounter giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys, zebras, and abundant birdlife โ often within metres of the trail.
The dramatic summit push follows the narrow, knife-edged rim of the ancient volcanic crater โ one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in all of East Africa.
With a fraction of Kilimanjaro's crowds, Mount Meru offers a more exclusive, intimate trekking experience. You will have vast stretches of mountain entirely to yourself.
On clear mornings, from Mount Meru's summit you are rewarded with one of the world's most dramatic views โ Kilimanjaro's glaciated peak floating above the clouds at eye level.
Standard Mount Meru trekking circuit via Miriakamba and Saddle Huts.
Enter Arusha National Park and begin trekking through tropical montane forest. Your armed ranger escorts you through wildlife territory โ expect giraffes, buffaloes, and warthogs. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) for dinner and overnight.
Trek through moorland and giant heathers with opening views of the crater. Optional afternoon acclimatisation walk up Little Meru (3,820m) for sweeping panoramas. Stay overnight at Saddle Hut.
A midnight start (midnight or 1:00 AM) for the dramatic summit push. Trek along the narrow crater rim with views of the ash cone far below and Kilimanjaro across the clouds. Reach Socialist Peak at sunrise. Descend all the way to Miriakamba Hut.
Final descent through the forest, with last wildlife encounters before exiting the national park. Transfer back to Arusha for a well-deserved celebration.
Trekking Mount Meru 4โ5 days before your Kilimanjaro attempt is one of the most effective acclimatization strategies available. You arrive at Kilimanjaro base camp already altitude-adapted, significantly boosting your summit success rate.
Our specialist team can plan a seamless back-to-back expedition with rest days in Arusha in between โ two summit moments, one unforgettable Tanzania adventure.
Plan a Combo Trek โ
Yes. Entry to Arusha National Park requires a park fee, and an armed ranger is mandatory on all treks. RAO Tours handles all permits and ranger fees as part of your package.
Absolutely โ and we highly recommend it! Trekking Meru 4โ5 days before Kilimanjaro is one of the best acclimatization strategies available, significantly improving your chances of a successful Kilimanjaro summit.
The summit day of Mount Meru is actually steeper and more physically demanding than most Kilimanjaro routes. However, at 4,566m the altitude is lower, reducing the risk of serious altitude sickness. Overall, it is comparable in physical challenge to a Kilimanjaro Machame day.
Arusha National Park is home to giraffes, Cape buffaloes, zebras, colobus and blue monkeys, warthogs, flamingos, and over 400 bird species. An armed ranger accompanies all trekking parties specifically for wildlife safety.
